CRIMSON WING
Release date: October 19, 2010
Blu-ray version (some materials may not
appear on the DVD version)
This latest DisneyNature release takes flight with the amazing story of the pink flamingo. This is quite a different style from the DisneyNature theatrical releases in several ways. For one, the entire film focuses on a single creature, rather than the “Earth” and “Oceans” films which featured wide varieties of animals.
“Crimson Wing” is also much more artsy and symbolic, not always just a straightforward documentary. There are more moments where you hear the natural sounds rather than music, and when there is music it’s a much less traditional musical score than the others.
What it does have in common is the camera shots that make you scratch your head in wonder over how they got that shot. It’s awe inspiring to see the millions of flamingos and certainly proves that birds of a feather sure do flock together. After seeing this movie, you’ll certainly walk away with a great knowledge and respect of this beautiful crimson-winged bird.
BONUS FEATURES
FILMMAKER ANNOTATIONS takes DVD commentary to an all new level thanks to blu-ray technology. Rather than just hearing voices while watching the film, you can actually see who’s speaking in pop-up videos that don’t obstruct the picture. There are also some pop up text facts that appear on the screen as well. It really is a different experience to watch the film again with these capabilities.
The SCREEN SAVER is just over five minutes and loops continuously. It’s enjoyable to sit and watch one time, and with a pleasant musical track might be nice to have on in the background. As a screen saver, it certainly serves its purpose by having a loop of moving images on the screen, but it doesn’t kick in automatically, you still need to select it from the menu.
What seems to be a standard feature on the DisneyNature blu-ray releases is the interactive LIVING PLANET. Our blu-ray player is hooked up to the internet, which allows us to rotate the onscreen Earth, and click on the various hot spots around the world. These offer various popups of interesting text and even some new video footage, and the content changes monthly!
Finally there are the LAKE NATRON DIARIES: BEHIND THE CRIMSON WING (19:42)
This is the behind-the-scenes feature that answers your questions such as where they stayed during filming or why they chose the various musical scores. There’s also additional facts from the filmmakers about the flamingos and about the mystical Lake Natron.
This bonus feature is actually divided into five short segments, and my personal favorite details the filming process. It focuses on the various strategies and tactics used to get those amazing “how’d they get those?” shots that nobody has ever captured on film before.
Hope knowing what's on the “Crimson Wing” blu-ray left you tickled
pink.
